If you have green fingers like me, but don’t have the space to let your ideas grow, let me show you how ‘n boer maak ‘n plan:

For the herb box, you will need:

1 x wooden wine box (this is an excellent excuse to stock up on good wine) a couple of pebbles or rocks, potting soil, herbs – mint, flat leaf parsley, basil, rosemary and thyme grow very easily but you can plant pretty much anything

Fill the bottom of the box with a 5cm layer of pebbles (this helps with drainage) and then fill the rest with potting soil and plant your herbs. Place the box in a sunny corner on your balcony.. If you want your herbs to grow like they’re on crack, add some  fertiliser from Talborne Organics. Sip wine while you watch them grow.
