Ian and Mariota’s LA home
My talented pal Mariota grew up on a farm in the heart of Zululand, but now lives in Venice Beach with her husband Ian in a sunny bungalow. Over a skype chat the other day we decided to collaborate on this blog post and bring you a voyeuristic peak into their daily life. I Hope you enjoy the home tour as much as I did! All pics by Mariota Bauer.
Tell me about Venice Beach? Ian and I moved to Venice Beach 2 years ago. We were living in Amsterdam and after 3 years of rain, we were desperate for some sun. Venice Beach is home to celebs, gangsters, muscle men, hipsters and hobos – living in close proximity to one another. It doesn’t have the feeling of the glitz and glam you immediately associate with LA – and that’s why we love it. The palm trees are endless, and the sun really does shine every single day. We’ve accumulated a lot of hats since moving here!
I buy lots of things every time I go to South Africa, so our home is full of items from artists and designers back home. Covering our sofa (a Craigslist find) in Skinny la Minx fabric helps with the homesickness!
Both our mothers are artists, and we’ve received most of the art work hanging in our house from the 2 of them. One of our most treasured possessions is a painting depicting a Zulu wedding by my godmother Gail Van Lingen.
What do you do on weekends? You’ll find us on the beach – surfing, walking, and cycling along the boardwalks – we live about a 3 minute walk from the beach so there’s really no excuse. Ian loves to braai, one of our favourite recipe books is “A week in the Kitchen” by South African Karen Dudley, the carrot and beetroot salad is amazing!
What do you love most about your neighbourhood? We really love the lifestyle here – our front door is always open, letting the sea breeze in. Venice is incredibly colourful – the homes are painted brightly (our bungalow is sky blue) and flowers are everywhere – the smell of jasmine is pungeant in Spring. We are lucky enough to live just off the hip and happening street Abbott Kinney that boasts a wide variety of restaurants, interior shops, galleries and boutique clothing stores. One of our favourite spots is Gjelina’s – if you are ever in Venice, you’ve got to try it (and order the mushrooms truffle toast and brocollini dishes!)
What are the favourite items in your home? We’ve lived in the US/London/Amsterdam and South Africa, and our home is an eclectic mix of items we’ve collected all over the world. I’m constantly evolving our home, and buying things that I love not and because of how it’ll fit in with our décor. Our home is filled with items that remind us of places and people that we love. Antiques passed down from grandparents, childhood photographs taken by my dad, flea market finds (the Rose Bowl market in Pasadena is incredible for vintage finds) as well as modern bits and pieces.
We’ve also grown to love gardening – plants grow so fast here, and succulents come in every size. We both work in advertising which means the hours are long behind a desk – gardening is a great de-stresser.
Talking about favourite items in our home – how could I not mention our 2 beloved Siamese cats! You’ll find them basking in the sun, or chatting constantly to remind us that they are actually the most important beings in Venice Beach.
One of my favourite pics, Ian and Mariota “hanging out” with the Venice locals, thanks for sharing your home!
