Calitzdorp #2

A couple of things you must do if you’re planning a trip to Calitzdorp – take the Tradauw Pass from the N2, it’s a breath-taking drive which will take you to Barrydale and onto the rest of Route 62, it’s pretty flipping awesome. And once in C-dorp, go off-road onto the Groenkloof valley and stop off at Roger Young’s woodwork studio and photographic gallery:

These birds are real!

Roger showed us his beautiful home across the road from his studio:

The amazing creations by his costumier partner:

Take a dip in the Nels River dam:

Then do a wine tasting at Peter and Yvonne Bayly’s farm. This is the view from the stoep, where we spent a lot of time tasting their superb Port and talking to Yvonne about life and the art of soap making.

And when you’re heading home and feeling adventurous, take the Rooiberg pass to CT via Vanwyksdorp. About 15kms on that road you will pass Dr Nellis Janse van Rensburg’s  Douw-Karoo succulent nursery. A real character – he has an incredible selection and knows each plant by their scientific name. He also told us that he’s from Namibia and likes to live on the outskirts of society (Calitzdorp is too big for him). He doesn’t have a website but you can call him on 072 7421846.

After a looong drive on the Rooiberg Pass dirt road, you will get to the Garcia Pass, another crazy beautiful drive that will take you to Riversdale and back onto the N2 and civilization will be right there where you left it…

Love to read about Calitzdorp, so proud of my little hometown. Stay in Gauteng now but go back every year. We are planning to go over Easter again.
